Mobocracy: A discourse on bad democracy.

I
usually shy away from the topic of politics because one, more often
than not, politics is a very stressing issue to tackle and two, I have
long since moved on from the political/philosophical provocateur I was
when I was younger into a writer with genuine appreciation for life.

 

Now
I am appalled to even write about politics, I usually write about the
things I missed out on when I was busy contemplating my agnosticism or
rabidly bashing political machinations in online message boards.Now I
write about things that I have neglected for so long; about things that
make me feel alive.I promised myself that this blog would never be a
channel for political prattle.

 

With
the recent culmination of events in the political scene however, I felt
the obligation to put in my 2 cents on the matter.I feel that this mobocracy we Filipinos
are exhibiting is a cancer that eats away the essence of
democracy.Democracy empowers the people, but there are ramifications of
it that we need to see—the most pertinent one is irresponsible
democracy; the kind of democracy that takes all its grievances to the
streets; the kind that cops out by circumventing its own constitution.

Now
don’t get me wrong, I was in favor of the 1986 EDSA revolution and I
feel like it was a time when the nation exercised its constitutional
liberties properly. Other than the fact that I am but a four-year-old
toddler forced to tug along with my parents with no political visions
whatsoever back in 1986, I think even if I did have the proper
prerogatives to wholeheartedly and voluntarily join the “first”(and for
me the ONLY true) people power revolution, I wouldn’t have hesitated to
partake in the `86 mass action because it has a purpose above anything
else— a very noble purpose—It served to unfetter us from the grasp of a
dictator who by every means sullied the very essence of the democracy
we rightfully deserved, a dictator who pushed all the buttons to keep
himself in the seat of power and found all the loopholes to milk the
country dry.

 

“EDSA
2” was, however, a validation of the negative corollaries of democracy.
It was a matter which could’ve been resolved on a mutually agreed upon
and fair battleground that the opposition (at that time) themselves
blatantly disregarded by an emotional show of arrogance and a series of
theatrical resignations and walk-outs—A matter that was taken to the
streets by a highly mobile anti-ERAP mob.

 

I
wasn’t Pro-ERAP, hell I didn’t even vote for the guy; I didn’t like
him.But after how We should’ve let this constitutional process take its
course. What ever happened to “presumed innocent until proven guilty”?
I for one wanted to hear his side prior to passing
my judgment. It was a trial by publicity. All the noisy anti-Erap
people had their minds made even before Chavit blew his whistle at that
time. Those people just found another plank to remove that president
for their own selfish agenda.

 

What
I’m driving at is that we just cannot oust anyone without due process.
This is such a bad precedent we have started. My worries do not lie
with GMA, and frankly I do not care whether or not she’s guilty. But I
care about our constitution and our laws. I firmly believe that
anything extra-judicial or extra-constitutional should not be
tolerated. Similarly, I believe that the constitution is supposed to be
held immutable.Otherwise, we shall all be governed by mob-rule. The
ends never justify the means.

 

I remember an article claiming that the Philippines is the reason to doubt democracy in Asia.  Are we gonna live up to that?

Who says exercising our democratic rights starts and ends at casting the ballot? If by mobocracy you mean going to the streets in protest or in expression of disgust over an evidently corrupt and morally bankrupt government, then yes, we are that. See, when you say "mob" it means a disorganized, chaotic, "headless" throng of people. The tens of thousands of Civil Society groups and concerned citizens who have gone to EDSA in the last 2 decades are hardly that.

Let me ask you this, have you ever been to an EDSA? If not, then you be careful with the words you use without fully understanding what they mean, lest you be accused of parroting foreign parrachute journalists who know squat.

I think I understand where Mike is coming from. I myself am for everything that 1986 stood for but over the last five years there were a lot of attempts to take over the presidency.

Marcos was a dictator, plain and simple. He manipulated every cog of the system to his favor. Erap on the other hand is incompetent but I digress. The point is due process mandated by the Constitution and I stand with Mikey in saying that the constitution should be immutable.

Presidents are people too and thus make lapses in judgment. Bill Clinton exhibited behavior unbecoming of a head of state but he was impeached and tried rather than being given a trial by publicity and being pressured by the power hungry. He finished his term.

EDSA has been perverted over the last couple of years and the time when kids would take it to EDSA whenever they’re not getting enough allowance is not too far in the future at the rate this is going.

edsa dos was also a noble undertaking. we booted out a corrupt and incompetent leader. even the SC affirmed the legitimacy of the GMA presidency.

EDSA was perverted by those who benefited from it: Cory and GMA. they never implemented genuine reforms in governance.

the people only wants change and the streets remain a viable option to effect changes in our society. expressing the peoples' sentiments is a very democratic activity.

Let me tell you a story, When I was 15, I was in a grunge band. We recorded our songs using an el-cheapo tape recorder and the turnout really killed us. We were proud as hell of what we have accomplished. How did it sound? If you ask me I'll say it is awesome, but then again it's because I was PART of that record. BUT in THIRD person, the general opinion about our little cassette was it–in plain and simple french–SUCKED.

I resent the fact that you write off the opinons of foreign journalists on the matter. This is the type of attitude from haughty know-it-alls that make conversations in political fora a collection of slightly well-worded rhetorics at best.
