i am now a sucker for foreign (non-English) films; spanish films, specifically.

although daniel already gave up on any
hope, faltering or not, that i will ever be able to speak espanol and
understand it perfectly, he did manage to sit through the whole movie
with my occassional inquiries. “do you really understand what they are
saying?” i whispered during the earlier part of the movie.

“if you will not shut up, then i
wouldn’t.” he said and grinned while he terrorized and massacred the
nachos served incorrectly to him. i told him to serve it plain, he told
me as we went in, but he fucking started putting everything on it.

we do not make movies like Los lunes
al Sol anymore. in fact, i am not even sure if we even tried to. we
seem to be very concentrated on cheesy love stories, the unjust
treatment of the poor, the evils of the rich, and the messy, forcibly
complicated love triangles, quadrangles, and a very small world that
the characters seem to be revolving in.

Hector. i remember talking it over with daniel before that somehow the
audience dictates what kind of movies are to be made. that is probably
why we do not make too many movies like these two. not too many people
appreciate it: it is real and probable. subconsciously, we enjoy movies
because they show us something that could not happen to us. in fact,
the only reason the telenovelas and chinovelas and koreanovelas (or
whatever they are called now) are so popular is because what the
characters have gone through is in no way gonna be fucking probable in
our normal, real lives. (thank God). every friggin evening when i
arrived at home and my sister jesse had the television stuck in Sassy
Girl-Choon Yang (or whatever she is called), it just kill me over and
over again. how could two people married and bound by the sacrament of
matrimony could go and flirt with someone else in such elementary,
unadulterated way? and why do these telenovelas always have catchers
(e.g. guys who always catches the heroine who never seem to cease being
a damsel in distress!) who own companies or are very rich or are very
instrumental?

“i never thought the movie could be
that good.” he told me as we stood up and walked towards the exit. even
if daniel did not say that, it is pretty obvious that he thought of the
same; he was practically chuckling on the greater part of the movie.

i turned my mobile phone on and said, “i don’t want to grow old like that.”

he laughed and rumpled my hair, “what a funny thought. and yes, it is sad, nevertheless.”

i do not want to grow old like the
lead actors in the movie. i do not want to be in my forties and have to
get in line for an interview that will never get me a job because kids
almost twenty years younger than I am are vying for the same position.
i do not want to be in my forties and spend my mondays as i would spend
my sundays, to finally stop differentiating weekends with weekdays
because there is no difference anymore. i do not want to get old and
miserable for most part of the week, regardless of whether or not the
misery can sometimes be an outlet for temporary fun. sometimes, it is
easy to laugh at our misfortunes. other times, it just fucking hurt.
“it’s sad, no?” daniel murmured. “but it is a great movie.”

ahhh, don’t we just love anything that ends in tragedy?
