How I pwn3d the MRT

God, I am so fucking proud of myself. You see, last Friday, I took the MRT for the first time in years. Now this may not sound much to you, but for me, it’s one of the few “athletic” moments of my life I can be proud of. I say “athletic” because everybody familiar with the Ortigas area knows that the walk from

Emerald Avenue to the Ortigas Station of the MRT is a long, treacherous one. Okay, it’s not; truth is it’s roughly a 150 meter walk through a friendly, urban landscape bustling mostly with call center zombies and weak-wristed metrosexual yuppies.

Everybody who reads this blog knows that I, Mike ‘Fucking’ Villar, have a golden heart. And I have a golden heart because it’s wrapped in cholesterol and anything that involves some sort of physical effort is, to me, tantamount to a near death experience. The last time I played basketball, my left lung collapsed after a sad two minutes of walking up and down the court. Also, the last time I had something resembling sex with a woman (taking pictures of her wearing a cowboy hat while I yell demeaning stuff at her. Crying), I suffered a mild stroke that landed me in the hospital for two weeks. Then Jail.

 

So anyways, let’s go back to Friday; after loudly arguing on the phone with my dad and cursing at him for not picking me up like he promised to, I went on my way. Like I said, I haven’t taken the MRT or public transportation for that matter for years now. I didn’t want to embarrass myself so I asked my friend Jolo for information on how to ride the MRT. I’m not sure exactly how the conversation went but it’s something along these lines:


Me: Jolo, I’m taking public transportation home tonight, how do I get to the MRT station again?


Jolo: Dude, you seriously don’t know how to get to the MRT station?


Me: [Not wanting to sound like an idiot] erm, of course I do! I meant the fastest way to get to the MRT station. It’s Friday, I have a wicked party I’m crashing. You don’t want to be late for that man. Nope.


Jolo: Well just go through the Podium parking lot and there’s an alley that goes through Megamall.


Me: [Starting to get uneasy] then?


Jolo: What do you mean then? The MRT station is just up the stairs to your right by then.


Me: [Sweating like a pig, hyperventilating and turning red] Did you say stairs?


Jolo: Yeah man, the very steep ones.


Me: [Cardiac arrest]


I went on my way and was already sweating profusely after a couple of steps out of our office building. The wool sweater I was wearing didn’t help my case either. You see, being the fat guy I am, I always wear a sweater or a jacket which I zip up to my neck to hide the hideous layers of flab on my body. I could’ve easily taken it off after I realized that I’m not in NYC but in Metro Manila, easily, one of the most humid places you could be on earth. Alas, my mighty insecurity triumphed over me and I decided that I’d rather keep my sweater on and sweat like a motherfucker than being ridiculed by people for being obese. Bad idea. (part one)


I said I was sweating like a motherfucker after only walking a couple of meters. This means that by the time I reached Megamall, the halfway mark, I was so drenched in sweat that I could literally take off my shirt and sweater, squeeze it and extract enough sweat from them to fill up a one liter bottle. People were starting to give me looks; not the “Oh my God, that guy’s sweating like a mother. I bet his crotch smells foul” looks that I get all the time but rather “Oh my God, that guy’s about to die! Should I help him? Nah, he looks smelly” looks.


After the grueling 15 minute walk which, I’m sure, dealt a significant damage to my heart, I was there. The towering stairs that stood between me and home hulked over me tauntingly. If the stairs could talk, I’m pretty sure it’s saying “Well well well, If it isn’t Mike Fucking Villar. It’s been a long time since we last faced each other my dear adversary. I missed you. But I’m afraid I cannot let you pass. God you smell bad [Cue epic battle music]”


The crazy thing about going up a long flight of stairs with other people is it reminds you how utterly out of shape you are. A 60ish woman was climbing the stairs with me and she reached the top effortlessly. I, on the other hand, had to take a breather halfway. I was panting like hell and right then and there, I’m pretty sure I’m going to suffer a stroke. So I did what I thought would be the best thing to make me feel better. I lit a cigarette. Bad idea. (part two)


I heaved myself over the last step and raised my hands triumphantly which, I’m sure, made me look all the weirder. I went up the counter and paid for my trip to Quezon Avenue. It costs 12 pesos, incredibly cheap. Anyway, all the while I thought my battle was won. After all, I successfully traversed the rugged terrain of the Ortigas Center and conquered the monstrous flight of stairs that led to the MRT station. I mean, what else could there be?


Then I remembered the train. To give you a better picture of what the MRT looks like on a Friday night rush hour, imagine those trains ferrying Russian conscripts from the provinces to Stalingrad in World War II. It’s a lot fucking worse than that.


Here’s how I looked like while waiting for a train:
Train 1 stops: No dice. Even Kate Moss can’t squeeze herself in there.


Train 2 stops: Nope. I’m pacing back and forth sweating even more.


Train 3 stops: Nada. Venting my frustration over a fake phone call.

Saying really stupid stuff like “What do you mean the Limo’s busted? FIX IT! Or fucking bring the chopper. I don’t care what you do, just get me out of this third world swamp!”


I finally decided that I’ve waited long enough. I promised myself that I am going to squeeze myself in the next train even if it means that I need to throw out a pregnant woman out the fucking door. The fourth train finally arrived and I jumped in amid the collective cursing of the passengers. The car was so packed that when the door closed my face was literally smack against it and this guy’s face was in my armpit. I did it! I am on my way home! I’m sure the guy behind me was rubbing his junk against my ass but I didn’t care anymore. What’s important is I fucking owned the MRT.
